Traffic was up. Demos were not. What Katie Whatley did next

Katie Whatley had the traffic, the case studies and the brand metrics. What she did not have was action. Her read: the story was strong and the delivery was too slow.

Katie Whatley's number one priority is getting the right people onto a demo. At the start of this year, website growth was up year on year, the brand and awareness work was landing, and people were not booking. That was a huge gap. The team did the usual things, including using AI to test nurture sequences, and plenty of those nurtured leads are still sitting in nurture, having never made a decision.

What she kept coming back to is that the raw material was fine. People like the story: FFAIR's CEO lived the pain of exhibiting himself, knew that if exhibiting is hard enough people cancel the stand, and built the product to fix it. That is authentic rather than positioned, and authenticity is a big part of marketing now.

People also like the platform and say so.

The reframe

The question was not how to generate more interest. It was how to get the story, and the useful five minutes of an intro demo, in front of somebody faster, without a calendar invite standing in the way.

Her answer was video: put the story a person already tells on calls, plus the useful five minutes of an intro demo, directly onto the pages where traffic already lands. A visitor gets exactly what a booked call would have given them, without needing to book one.

The people arriving are in a different mindset

Three years ago they came through Google and her daily priority was ranking. They still come through search, but now mainly through LLMs. In HubSpot she can see whether somebody arrived via ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity. They are arriving, which is good, but they arrive differently and expect different things when they land: they have usually already had a detailed answer to their question before they ever reach the site, so a generic homepage pitch reads as a step backwards. What they want instead is fast confirmation of what they were just told, the proof behind it, and an obvious way to act on it, not another form standing between them and the five minutes that would actually convince them.

The linear journey does not describe them either. Lead, nurture, MQL, SQL held longer in B2B than in consumer marketing, but what she is seeing now is the messy middle, and search as a behaviour rather than a channel.

More was never the answer

There are not five or six tactics available now, there are ten or twenty. AI means you can produce more of everything: more content, more emails, more pages, more posts. Katie is firmly not in the more-is-more camp, and says it has never been the answer at FFAIR. The question is where you spend the time and what actually cuts through.

Which is why the fix was not another channel. It was putting the thing that already worked, the story told by a person, where the traffic was already arriving.

Next year the plan is more humanity, deliberately

The website had to be adapted for how search worked in 2020, again for how it works now, and it will need adapting for 2027. On top of that the conversion has to happen on the site, with the story told there rather than saved for the sales call.

AI lets the team do a lot while staying lean and she would not give that up. But the strategy going into next year is to bring more humanity into the marketing, because it works harder than the AI-assisted work does.

If your numbers look healthy and nobody books

  • Write down the story that already convinces people on calls. That is the video script.
  • Put it where the traffic lands, not behind a form.
  • Check your CRM for LLM referrers and treat that traffic as a different mindset.
  • Count how many leads are parked in nurture and never decided.
  • Before adding a tactic, ask what you would remove to make room for it.
